Everyone’s makeup journey is different. Playing around with eyeshadow colours and trying out different eyeliner techniques were how I kicked off mine. It was really about self-expression and having fun along the way. After going to makeup school, my perspective on makeup changed and everything in my head became more technical. Figuring out how to change or improve certain features were the end goals. Although it can be fun, I believe makeup also helps to enhance our facial features. There always comes a time in a woman’s life where it can get out of control and instead of enhancing what we already have, some end up looking like a totally different person. It’s true that at the end of the day it’s only makeup, and everybody has the choice to look the way they want.

I, like every women, have faced many challenges when it came to my looks. It still surprises me that there were times in my life where I masked myself in makeup just to look like the person I thought I needed to look like. And as the saying goes, ‘As I got a little bit older, I also I got a little bit wiser’. All those things I considered imperfections were and are still charming features that make me who I am. I’m nowhere near perfect but I don’t ever feel the need to completely cover up every acne scar, wear heavy eyeliner, chisel and sharpen out cheek bones with contour, or wear false lashes on a daily basis anymore. Instead, I’ve learned to love what I was born with and work around that.

Learning to enhance what you already have has never felt more empowering. I’ve really eased down on always trying to cover things up. Now I focus on making my features stand out without being overpowered by so many products. Charlotte Tilbury recently came out with four Quick ‘N’ Easy Makeup kits that can easily create polished looks in minutes. Each kit achieves different looks: Daytime Chic Look, Natural Glowing Look, Smokey Eye Evening Look, and Red Carpet Party Look. I’ve found that these perfectly highlight your features in the most natural way possible – less is more really does apply here. I’ve incorporated these Charlotte Tilbury products with my other favourites, and I now feel like I have found all the right makeup products that help let my features shine through in the most flattering way possible.

Personal tips and tricks:
1. Find a foundation that’s light to medium coverage for a “my skin but better” look.
2. An eyelash primer is your mascaras best friend.
3. If you also have oily skin, don’t fear cream finishes, but do go easier on them.
4. On lazy days, curl your lashes and fill in your brows.

This post was not sponsored by Charlotte Tilbury – I was kindly sent these products. All opinions are my own.

Love these shots of you! You are so pretty! And that lip colour literally is so perfect for your skin tone. I totally agree about enhancing what you have vs completely changing your look. When I have a little girl some day I definitely want her to understand that makeup is to bring out your features, and not get rid of them. People are getting so carried away these days it feels like. Everyone is unique!

Thanks so much Emily! And that’s so sweet about telling your future girl about makeup! I will definitely do the same. I think as little girls they need to hear that they are beautiful no matter what <3

Your photos are great! I wish I had the right light to take my photos but it’s a struggle! I always do my brows on days when I am not wearing any makeup and apply a lip balm, but filling my brows makes a huge difference! x

Oh you won’t believe my struggles when taking photos too! Winter clouds have not been kind to us lol. Same, when I don’t have time or not feeling makeup I just do my brows and it’s all good!

  3. Love your view on makeup, couldn’t have said it better! I love makeup when it’s about enhancing what one already got and make the most of it. Not completely transform the face to another and forget all about the gorgeous features one already have from the beginning. Lovely tips too, I always go for brows and curled lashes when I’m stressed/tired – as in today! Xx

I think especially now things have gotten really carried away with makeup! I think it’s totally fine to play around with makeup, but many people rely on it too much rather seeing it as an art anymore. And perhaps it’s with age but I just want to look more fresh and myself. I feel like when you wear so much makeup and are use to it, there’s some expectation to always have to look that way everyday. Thanks for reading girl!

  5. I always adore your photography – it looks like a magazine editorial! I agree that ehancing your features is so much more empowering than simply re-shaping what you want your features to be! 🙂

Thanks Lindsay! Well this lighting has been off as you know, but we always find ways to work around it :] I hope we can all just take it easy on the heavy contouring and highlighting to see what we have underneath!

I really like this post as you perfectly well describe the path through which each girl has to pass to understand how to accept her skin, and features in general! I couldn’t relate more to it and enhancing my features is all I do on a day to day basis, I leave the fun or heavy makeup looks for special occasions!

Definitely! I think going all out on occasions makes it extra special. It’s kind of like when you see a man in a suit for the first time in awhile and they just look so handsome and charming (even if they might not be lol). It just has that extra favour. But on day to day I think our more natural looks just with a few tweaks is nice!

  7. What a lovely post. And you look stunning. Plus these photos are total goal! Great job!
