Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: Ramona Flowers Inspired Makeup

Posted by: Stacey Maka

I just couldn’t wait for Halloween to do this look! And if you’re like me and like to think about your costume ahead of time (this way ahead!), then I hope this might help you with some ideas. This was actually my costume last year, but I just had to show it again because it was one of my favourite looks of all time. Even though most people thought I was just some anime character it was still so much fun to be Ramona and walk along side my Scott Pilgrim.

Even though Ramona Flowers is such a badass I kept the makeup quite cute and simple. I enhanced my eye shape to make them appear bigger and went with soft pinks for the lips and cheeks. Here’s how to recreate this easy look.

1. Ramona has quite fair skin so using a BB cream (Lioele Triple the Solution) in a shade lighter than your own skin tone, apply it to your face, 2. Next, prep your eyes with a primer (Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion), 3. Mattify your face with pressed powder (Maybelline Dream Matte Powder), 4. Fill in your brows (Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Medium Ash).

5. Taking a beige shimmer eyeshadow colour (Kat Von D in Enjoy the Silence), 6. Apply it to your entire lid, 7. As well as your brow bone for a little more shine.

8. Now taking a shimmer bronze brown colour (Kat Von D in Pray for Me), 9. Apply it to your crease, 10. You may want to blend it in a bit.

11. Taking a white eyeliner pencil (from Sephora), you want to start lining your eyes, 12. I exaggerated them a bit to make my eyes appear slightly bigger.

13. Begin by winging out with liquid liner (Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner), 14 & 15. From underneath the white eyeliner, start connecting the lines together. We are trying to create a bigger and more cartoon eye just like Ramona’s eyes.  16. And thicken the line a bit to make your eyes stand out.

17. With a medium brown eyeshadow, 18. Apply the colour into your crease, 19 & 20. Get ready to apply some dramatic eyelashes and your teal wig (from ebay)!

Ramona has short hair but I chose to keep the wig long for my own spin.

21. Using a bronzer (The Balm Bahama Mama bronzer), 22. You want to create a narrower and smaller looking nose, 23. And with a pink blush (The Balm Down Boy), 24. Apply to the apples of your cheeks.

25 & 26. Finish your lips off with a cute milky pink colour (Melliesh in 05), 27. Apply mascara to your bottom lashes.

For wardrobe, I’m wearing a blue hoodie from American Apparel, a black choker I had laying around, Geo Honey Wing circle lenses, and some goggles I purchased from ebay.

I hope you enjoyed this easy Ramona Flowers look!

Spring Hair Flair!

Posted by: Stacey Maka

The weather is warming up so it’s time to stop hiding our manes in bulky hoods and hats and let them free again! Here are some adorable styles and trends to play with:

1. The Turband

This is the more modest version for those who are a little afraid of trying out the full on turban. This trend gained momentum last year but continues to be a perfect spring accessory. It’s very wearable and dresses up any boring outfit without looking too outrageous. You can play with the neon spring colours or stay reserved with earth tones.

2. The High Pony

It’s a bit of a late 80s to early 90s throwback but has always been a fun and playful look. If you want a sleeker look you can wear it straight but wearing it with a wavy or curly hair texture gives it a funkier look. To make it interesting you can add some volume by back-combing your hair.

Or add a fun accessory (very 80s Whitney Houston-esque don’t you think?)

3. The Messy Side Braid

Since the release of The Hungry Games movie, everyone has been inspired by the main character, Katniss, to rock a side braid. It’s ok to not be perfect with this one. Let pieces of hair hang out for a casual laid-back look. And to make it stand out even more, do an inverted braid instead of your regular one.

4. The High Bun

Is it just me or is there something very intriguing about a bun? It’s especially great for those in between don’t wash your hair days. If you’re still feeling too plain add a cute headband.

If you’re prone to many fly outs (as I am -__-), use a wax to keep things in place. I use  Schwarzkopf OSiS Rough Up.

The turband, big bow headband, and gem headband are all from Purely Fictional.

Bring Some Seoul To Your Face

Posted by: Stacey Maka

I found this small Korean shop near my work and I’m so happy I discovered this place since I usually have to order Korean products off ebay and we all know that sometimes having to wait for your shipment to come can be quite painful. It seemed the prices were just the same or actually even less than what you would find online.

This is Etude House Bee Happy! Lip balm in the ladybug tin which smells of peach without the taste. I’ve tried this out for a few weeks now and it works extremely well.

Next is the Etude House Sweet Eye Cupcake in #1 Banana & Chocolate. A lot of Etude House’s packaging is kiddy which they are known for but don’t be fooled for the quality is very much there. That’s what I love about products from Asia; you can buy great quality for an inexpensive price.

These are the swatches:

The only product that isn’t from Etude House is the Innisfree Eco Safety No Sebum Sunblock SPF 35 PA+++. Since the sun is out again I thought I would grab some sun protection that won’t make my already oily skin even oilier than it is. I’ve never heard of this brand ever but once I got home and researched a bit it had good reviews so I can’t wait to try this product out. I also snatched some Etude House Oil Control Paper blotting sheets. I usually like to use the toilet seat paper covers you find in the public washrooms. It sounds weird but really it is a good trick to get excess shine off your face!

If you really can’t find any of these or just Asian beauty products in general locally (I’m sure you can though, just check out any Asian store/supermarket) there are many sites out there that sell tons, one being one of my favourite sellers on ebay (rubyruby). She is especially well known for her wide range in BB creams which we all noticed have really boomed in North America this year.  So if you are curious to try something new defiantly explore Korean cosmetics.

Pucker Up For Spring!

Posted by: Stacey Maka

I am not usually a daily lipstick wearer nor am I that daring when it comes to lip colour, but recently there are a few I’ve been in love with and using religiously. One of the hottest colours this spring (and let’s be honest, it’s basically every spring time) is coral. I’ve been obsessing with peachy colours. They’re just so damn cute!

These are my spring picks and current favourites.

From left to right: MAC in Shy Girl, REVLON Colorburst Lip Butter in Peach Parfait, and RIMMEL Moisture Renew in Soft Coral.

Rimmel’s Soft Coral is the newest member to my small lipstick family and I must say it’s a fun addition to my collection…

Revlon’s Peach Parfait is similar to Rimmel’s Soft Coral but it is slightly more pigmented. As you can see from the first image of my post, this one has gotten a lot of use. Lip Butters were the craze for the last few months and its hype really speaks for its self.

I love MAC’s Back to M-A-C Program so I was able to get Shy Girl as a freebie (woot)…

I’ve also really been digging these Barry M Lip Gloss Wands:

From top to bottom: 12 Strawberry Milkshake, 02 Toffee, and 11 Coral.

If you’re not really into wearing lipsticks then these are the next best thing. I tend to have dry lips but I’ve had no problem with these. They come off as tints but 12’s (Strawberry Milkshake) consistency goes on stronger than the 11(Coral) and 02 (Toffee). Barry M Cosmetics is a UK brand so you cannot find these in North America; however you can order them online from sellers on ebay.

Monthly Subscription Fever

Posted by: Stacey Maka

If you are a big fashion and beauty follower on youtube, you would notice that this year monthly subscription websites have become more popular than ever. There are a ridiculous amount of haul videos out there showcasing your favourite guru’s subscription goodies. I still don’t know much about them but the way these sites work is you take a quiz answering questions about your lifestyle, what brands you like, or which celebrities fashion you admire. Then based on your answers you are matched with items that would best fit your personal taste and style. I myself don’t have that much money to burn every month, however most subscriptions give you the option of skipping the months you don’t find anything you like which is not a bad deal.

The 3 most popular right now are:

JewelMint.com

This subscription is the hottest one out there right now. I’m seriously bombarded on my youtube newsfeed with jewelmint hauls. The jewellery is designed by Kate Bosworth and her stylist Cher Coulter. I must say after my assessment they matched me pretty well with pieces I would defiantly wear for myself. Their monthly fee is $29.99 USD. And they do ship to Canada so you might want to give this one a try.

MeUndies.com

They are known as “the world’s most comfortable underwear” on which I couldn’t agree more. I have recently joined this subscription and so far I’m impressed. MeUndies is $16 USD per/month and their shipping is quite fast. They give you 3 styles to choose from with a decent range of colours. MeUndies doesn’t just only target ladies, but they also have styles for the gents! So this would be a great gift for a boyfriend/husband or just in general a good giveaway for anyone. Packaging is really spiffy as well:

MyGlam.com

MyGlam was created by the most well known beauty guru on youtube, Michelle Phan. This is still a pretty new company and from reviews I’ve seen it has been getting mixed thoughts from the subscribers, however if you follow MyGlam or Michelle on twitter they are dedicating the time to improve themselves, and let’s face it…Michelle is amazing so who wouldn’t want to support her? Sadly this is the only one of the three that does not ship to Canada just yet. If you’re lucky to be living in the US then you should try it out, I mean it’s only $10 a month for deluxe samples and full-sized products so why not?

For the Canadians, alternatives to MyGlam are: glymm.com and glossybox.ca.
