Having a healthy glow after the summer is a badge of pride for many. Funny enough, tan skin is seen differently in every culture. In less developed countries, the poor are the ones working outside – hence why they had darker skin. While in western countries, a tan means you have enough money and time to go on vacations to develop that sun-kissed glow. Despite that all, times are changing.
A tan (when done right) not only makes you look healthier, but also brings out definition and structure in your face and body. However, tanning is something you need to do carefully. Skin cancer is a real risk, and you’re not immune to it, even if you tan with sunscreen on. Here are some things you can do to be more cautious.
Get a Spray Tan
Firstly, the best way to get a tan without exposing yourself to the sun too much is to go the fake route. If you want to be tanned but you don’t mind how you achieve it, a spray tan could be a great option for you. Many people choose them as an alternative because you can ensure that your tan is even all over. You can choose the shade you want and make sure it looks natural. There’s nothing to be scared of when you step into a spray tan booth. The technician will explain what to do, and it can take just a few minutes for you to get a beautiful tan.
Self Tan At Home
You might not like the idea of a spray tan. Perhaps you don’t want to spend the money, or if you’re like me and would just rather DIY in the privacy of your own home. You can choose from several products that will give you a fake tan – mousses, sprays, lotions, just to name a few. I do suggest applying any self tanner with a tanning mitt for a more accurate and even application. There are so many great brands to choose from, you can see my review on just a few here.
If you do want to get a natural tan, you need to be careful. You can’t avoid the sun completely, but you should try not to spend whole day lying directly in the sunlight. Instead of going to the beach to sunbathe for the entire day, let your tan build up slowly. It will come out as you walk around or as you sit in the sun for short periods.
Don’t Forget Sunscreen
It’s important to wear sunscreen whenever you’re out in the sun. Sometimes it can seem like it’s an overcast day but the sun can still affect you. Sunscreen won’t stop you tanning completely, unless you wear a very strong one. You should choose one with a high enough SPF to protect your skin. If you have fairer skin, you should select a higher SPF. Make sure you use enough too, and cover any skin that will be exposed to the sun, including hands and feet.
You can get a beautiful tan while still being safe if you do it right. Whether you choose fake or natural, you can get the tan you want!
