TōN of nude

Summer isn’t quite over just yet, and although I’m not looking forward to the end of it, my subconscious mind has already been unintentionally planning it out. I was born in the summer, and even when I’m not in my element, I’m such a summer baby deep down. I do have to admit though that I love everything about fall even — when the downside is that it’s so damn short in Toronto and starts to get cold very quickly. As we slowly start to move into fall, this is also usually when I love to play around with makeup again.

The quest to find the perfect nude lipstick isn’t always an easy one. An important factor that goes into choosing the right nude lippie would be getting the right undertone for your skin tone. Once we know whether we’re cool, warm, or neutral toned it can help determine which type of nudes suit us best. TōN Cosmetics has made it a lot easier by breaking down the different types of nudes in their line that will flatter each of the main 3 skin tones and undertones. Before we get into the collection, let’s discuss undertones.

Figuring out whether you’re cool, warm, or neutral undertoned is actually the simple part. There’s still some misconception about this but it’s not about how light or dark your skin is. People of all different skin colours, from very fair to very deep can all share cool, warm, or neutral undertones. For example, just because someone is of Asian decent it doesn’t automatically mean they fit into the warm category; some can share yellow or even pinkish/red undertones.

Cool (pink, red or bluish undertones)
Warm (yellow, peachy, golden undertones)
Neutral (a mix of warm and cool undertones)

There are several ways to figuring out your skin’s undertone, so start by looking at the inside part of your arm. This area naturally hides away from the sun so it usually has no signs of sun damage or discolouration, which is why skin in this area works best to reveal how warm, cool, or neutral your skin is. There are are a few questions to ask yourself to test this out:

1. When you’re out in the sun for awhile, does your skin get tanned easily with rarely getting a sunburn? If so, you probably lean towards a warm or neutral undertone. And if you usually get burnt than tanned, there’s a high chance you fall into the cool-toned category.

2. What colour do your veins appear? If you see bluish or a deep purple hues, you’re likely cool toned. If your veins appear greenish, you most likely lean towards warm-toned. And those with neutral undertones usually have difficulty determining the colour or possibly have a mixture that just looks very neutral.

3. Aside from your personal preference, do you look better in silver or gold? Cool undertones tend to look amazing with silver/platinum jewelry, while those with warm undertones look better in gold-toned jewelry, and Neutral skin tones look equally great in both.

4. Do you feel like your skin looks somewhat ashy or gray? If so, you perhaps might have olive skin — which is a combination of yellowish undertones, golden undertones, and with a bit of an obvious greenish hue that’s unique only to olive skin. Olive skin usually looks naturally tanned all year-round even without the sun exposure, and can fall into both the warm and neutral categories.

If my guide still has you unsure and in doubt, you can head to the TōN Cosmetics website and take their “Ton Test” to help determine your perfect shade.

TōN Cosmetics has made out the perfect colour match by including 9 different variations of basic nude lip colours so that there’s a colour for everyone to fall in love with. All lipsticks are very buttery upon application, and are made with the finest hydrating ingredients so that the formula is comfortable for long-lasting wear throughout the day. I personally enjoy and love the Fair and Dark lipstick colours; as I’ve found the Medium range to be a tad too girly powdery pink for my personal preference (if you’ve been following along with me for awhile now, you know I’m very picky when it comes to finding the right pinks for my skin tone). I also want to factor in that all summer long I’ve been maintaining a tan so my opinions could also possibly be altered once I return back into my natural sunless skin tone. And despite me saying the Mediums were my least favourite, I’ve actually repeatedly been wearing the Medium Cool 1 shade — so you might want to take that with a grain if salt.

Fair Cool 1 — Designed to neutralize your bluish hue, this nude was designed specifically for your fair, cool complexion.
Fair Warm 1 — With a peachy glow, a contrasting nude always fits this bill. This one is made to suit your warm and fair complexion.
Fair Neutral 1 — Not too pink and not too golden, this nude tint was designed to complement your balanced and fair complexion.

Medium Cool 1 — To cut the blue undertones in your skin, this slightly pinkish hue, with a delicate tint, will complement your medium complexion.
Medium Warm 1 — For the perfect understated finish, a slightly darker shade with a hint of beige will neutralize your undertones and complement your face.
Medium Neutral 1 — Just the right combination of undertones and a slightly darker hue make this lip colour ideal for your neutral undertone and medium complexion.

Dark Cool 1 — With a hint of reddish colour to contrast your natural undertones, this deep berry beige is the perfect nude for a dark yet cool complexion.
Dark Warm 1 — To achieve a true nude, this undertone nixes the peachy glow in your skin and highlights your dark complexion instead.
Dark Neutral 1 — The neutral undertone paired in our darkest shade will be the perfect understated lip colour for your gorgeous dark skin.

Have you found your perfect nude lip?

I’m one of those that has difficult undertones to figure out, I have blue veins but my skin can look quite warm so I find that neutral works best for me. I love the concept of the lipsticks for the three undertones, and the lipstick in the first picture looks amazing on you xx

I know exactly how you feel! My veins on my hands are green, but on my inner arm they’re a mix of green and like purple ones as well. I also notice that when I’m not very tanned I’m more cool toned, but when I’m more tanned I become olive skinned lol. I guess we just all need to experiment to find what suits us best in any situation.

  6. I’ve never given undertones much thought so this was very interesting to read. I’m pretty sure my skin has warm undertones since I never get sunburnt, gold jewellery looks better on me etc. All of these lipsticks are really pretty and they look amazing on you – which one was your favourite? xx

If that’s the case you’re very likely to be warm toned! This is going to sound weird but I have a very confusing skin tone. When I’m not very tanned I have a cool tone, but when I’m tanned I’m a lot more of an olive skin tone. So as of now I love the Fair Warm 1, Medium Cool 1, and Dark Warm 1.

  7. Absolutely love this guide and it was actually super useful!! I honestly never realised why warmer lip colours never suited me until you mentioned that my skin tone is actually cool. Lovely post and the pictures are stunning xx
